Octavio Rose Hingle is Bay Area performing artist and cultural producer whose work is informed by 10+ years of moving through a complex physical impairment. They center cross-disability access in immersive productions that are built through contemporary dance-theater, queer nightlife forms, musical composition and videographic design. Together, these elements conjure multi-sensory visions of our past and future ancestors that travel through the plastic vessel of the present moment.
Octavio holds a BA in Dance from Middlebury College, and has studied with the UCLA Dancing Disability lab, AXIS Choreo-Lab Fellowship, ODC/Dance and the Headlong Performance Institute. They were a recent artist-in-residence at ACRE (Steuben, WI), and have presented work with Judson Church (NYC), UQAM Gallery (Montreal, Quebec), and Counterpulse, Root Division, Rot Festival and Queering Dance Festival (Bay Area, CA). Octavio is the founder and co-producer of Crip Ecstasy, an accessible nightlife event series that envisions new blueprints for what club spaces can be.
“I’m interested in devising work that celebrates the resilience and intelligence of my always-shifting bodymind. I consider the practice of healing from a chronic illness as a highly creative act, and I want to honor this when I perform. In the studio, I merge every-day techniques of care and neuroplastic rehabilitation with the transcendent possibilities of queer fantasy. On stage, I hope that this alchemy can deconstruct the false binaries between disability and rigor; expanding our collective understanding of what embodiment can express.
At the same time, I want my work to not just be defined by my physical difference. What lies beyond this in my experience of the world. I feel called to rediscover parts of my artistic self that I thought were lost, and join creative conversations that I didn’t always have the tools to access. It feels equally important to interrogate the cultures of whiteness and imperialism that I’ve inherited in my body, and examine how these show up in my relationship to the world around me. Through all of this, I hope to deconstruct outdated hierarchies of power and desirability; co-creating new mythologies that witness both our human complexities and essential magnificence.”
